What is Freemasonry?

Ancient Free and Accepted Masonry is the oldest fraternity in the world. We are dedicated to improving and strengthening the Character of good men to make them better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors, and citizens. We accomplish this through allegorical teachings based upon the ancient stonemason guilds and the symbology of their professional working tools. We often say that ‘Masonry is a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols’.

Our organization is dedicated to building better men, strengthening our communities through charitable works, and the persistent pursuit of new knowledge and tools that can help each man in his journey.  If you are a man at least 18 years old, have a belief in a supreme being, live locally, and can pass a criminal background check, then we would love an opportunity to speak with you further.

Why Join Us?

We are not the Chamber of Commerce or a business networking group.  Those organizations have their place and they are valuable (and as an organization in downtown Castle Rock, we are proud members of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce).  But, our mission isn’t to grow your business or to expand a network of key influencers.  Our goal is to better your life and ours through the shared fellowship and community that the Lodge brings, while challenging each member to grow personally through time-tested lessons which help us refocus on the things that really matter in life.

Common Questions

The answers below are just a very brief start. We always enjoy meeting new potential members, called "Prospects" at our events which are open to the public. We also hold specific events designed to answer questions from prospects and give them opportunity to meet Brothers in our Lodge so they can decide if Masonry is right for them. The best way to learn more is to come meet us in person.

We often say that “Masonry is a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols.”  But, these words to little to convey the sense of brotherhood and community that remains at the core of all of our activities.

We won’t ask you to join.  Masonic tradition prohibits us from improper solicitations. Such requests could be misconstrued as ‘compulsory’ if initiated by a brother who also happened to be an employer, trusted community leader, or even a father. Each man must choose to join of his own free will, but there is a process.  Our rules, passed down through the generations, require any new candidate to have two existing members of the Lodge willing to sign your petition for membership and vouch for your character who have known you for at least 6 months.  For men who are new to freemasonry, this usually means that you need to spend some significant time getting to know us, and helping us get to know you to build those relationships.  This time is also a great opportunity to figure out if this is really what you hoped it would be.

Yes! We encourage interested individuals to visit our lodge during events or community functions. It’s a great way to get to know us better.  While non-members are not invited to stay for our closed meetings, we routinely have an open time for fellowship before our formal meetings where potential members are encouraged to attend and meet some of our Brothers.

Typically, men aged 18 or older can join Freemasonry. We welcome individuals from all walks of life who share our commitment to integrity and personal growth.

This is the subject of extensive debate even among Freemasons, but the answer remains unclear and somewhat lost to history. Freemasonry was not created in a moment, a day, or even a year. There are lodge records at least as old as 1599 and the Grand Lodge of England, formed by four London based lodges, was established in 1717. Some researchers believe the fraternity has much older roots from centuries before these early dates.

No. While the fraternity is friendly to all moral religions, it teaches no theological dogmas of its own.  There is no requirement of a particular faith, but we do require that members have a genuine belief in a supreme being.

No. Freemasons meet in buildings bearing our symbols, with posted meeting dates and times. Our members often wear rings or clothing bearing our symbols so that we can be readily identified by other members. Like many organizations, we do keep the content of our rituals secret from all but our members.

Part of the answer is that we, as Masons, took a sacred oath to keep certain details secret from all those who have not yet done the work to obtain the degrees of Masonry. Lots of organizations expect their practitioners to maintain secrets. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, developers, soldiers, and many others pledge to keep their valued information private. The information is not harmful or embarrassing, quite the opposite in fact. We firmly believe that things of great value, are not valued, if simply given away.
